Is Social Media a Fad or Here to Stay?

As a PR pro and someone who views social media as a communication tool that has tremendous marketing communications power that will persuade, influence and/or change public perception and image, I believe social media is a fundamental shift in the way we communicate. So yes, I believe it is here to stay.

Why many call social media “a fad” is beyond me. Times are a changin folks… and with that so is how people are getting their news and information, and communicating it all to others. Often, we’re not searching for news and information – its often now finding its way towards us [via social media].

I’ve been engaged in social media for a couple of years now… I use it as a communications mean (and personally) and I wouldn’t do my work as a PR professional without it. I know there are still some areas within the social media space that I still haven’t tapped, but for the most part, I feel like I jumped on at the right time a few years ago – when people looked at me as though I had three eyes.

Today, people who are just starting to understand the power it holds in communications, marketing and influence (public relations) are now begging for help to get there. And sometimes I just feel like laughing and saying “see, I told ya so.” But Im glad to see them getting there. Its good to see more and more people each day are inderstanding the social media power and this R E V O L U T I O N we’re in.

What is your thought? Fad or here to stay? And why do you think so?
